The Jon Schueler symposium, The Sound of Sleat: Echoes, Reflections, and Transfigurations, moderated by Lindsay Blair, took place from May 27-29 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the University of the Highlands and Islands, Isle of Skye, Scotland. A gathering of British and American scholars and colleagues gave presentations on the impact on Schueler's work of WW II, the strong identification with place and northness, color and form in music and his paintings, the parallel written language of painterly description, the formation of key ideas in the response to nature realized through equivalents and ambiguities in paint, the lure of the Scottish highlands to previous artists, the visual drama of ring-net fishing and Jon Schueler's involvement in the Mallaig fishing community, the 'interior landscape' of Schueler and Richard Diebenkorn, the Gaelic interpretations of color, and a meditation on water. In addition, recipients of the Jon Schueler residency program, Helmut Lemke and Oliver Mezger, gave talks on their work.
